Manual Therapy & Joint Mobilisations

Manual Therapy & Joint Mobilisations is a specialised form of treatment comprising a continuum of skilled passive movements to the spine & joint complex that are applied at varying speeds & amplitudes with the intent to restore optimal motion, function & /or reduce pain & stiffness.

The type of mobilisation used will depend on the severity, irritability & nature of the spinal/joint pain. The mobilisations create movement within the joints of the spine which reduces stiffness & makes movement easier. The increased ease of movement also reduces pain.

Who will benefit from manual therapy & joint mobilisations? Anyone who generally has mechanical pain, joint pain, joint stiffness, arthritis, surgery, returning to chosen sport/activity will benefit from the Maitland & Mulligan techniques.

These techniques may be used on your sports therapy/sports massage treatment.

Spinal Manipulation

Spinal Manipulation is a specialised treatment of pain & dysfunction. This treatment will comprise of mobilisation techniques first with a continuum of skilled passive movements to the spine & joint complex that are applied at varying speeds & amplitudes with the intent to restore optimal motion, function & / or reduce pain & stiffness. Followed by the manipulation techniques of HVT (High Velocity Thrust) or Grade 5 to achieve a joint cavitation that is accompanied by the cracking sound.

Spinal manipulation is a technique that treats back pain, neck pain & other musculoskeletal conditions via the application of force to the spinal joints, with the idea being that such treatment of dysfunctional areas in the spine can restore the spine's structural integrity, reduce pain & initiate the body's natural healing processes.

Spinal manipulation techniques is forced passive flexion, extension, & rotation of the vertebral segments, carrying the elements of articulation beyond the usual range of movement to the limit of anatomical range. Manipulation is a passive technique where the therapist applies a specifically directed manual impulse, or thrust, to a joint, at or near the end of the passive (or physiological) range of motion. This is often accompanied by an audible 'crack' which is a cavitation.

The common feature of spinal manipulation techniques is the fact they achieve a pop or cracking sound within the synovial joints. The cause of this audible release is widely accepted to represent cavitation of a spinal facet joint. When there is a lower pressure than normal in the facet joint, gas bubbles are being formed in the joint. At the moment that the pressure rises, the bubble implodes, this is called the cavitation.

Who will benefit from spinal manipulation? Anyone who generally has mechanical pain, muscular dysfunctions, joint pain, joint stiffness, arthritis, returning to chosen sport/activity will benefit from joint mobilisations & manipulations of the spine., & many more.

Spinal manipulation techniques may be used within your sports therapy or sports massage treatment. If you would like to have this treatment on it's own, please do get in touch & I will be able to advise you.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is a technique similar to acupuncture that is used for the treatment of trigger points & muscle pain. Dry needling is a targeted local response & eliminates myofascial trigger points from the muscles & does not inject anything into the soft tissues which is why it is called Dry Needling.

Dry Needling is a skilled intervention that uses a thin filiform needle that penetrates the skin & to stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points, muscular & connective tissues for the management of neuromusculoskeletal pain & movement impairments. Dry needling is a technique used to treat dysfunctions in skeletal muscle, fascia, connective tissue, & diminish persistent peripheral nociceptive input, reduce or restore impairments of body structure & function leading to improved activity & participation.

Dry needling is pinpointing those muscular aches & pains, concentrating on stimulating & releasing trigger points within the muscles. The precise effect this treatment has is pain relief, aid healing & recovery, release of myofascial trigger points, calming body & pain down, elevates mood, redness swelling, & many more benefits. If pain is still present after the injury location has healed, the needles will help to stimulate blood & oxygen to build up capillaries to fight infection, assists with local healing & pain relief. This is also great on scar tissue.

The filiform needles are solid, flexible & have a pointed, rounded tip. The needles are single use & disposable. Each needle comes pre-sterilised & protected in a plastic guide tube, which is used in the process of needle insertion. The needle & guide tube are wrapped in a peel-open blister pack, The combination of the needle tip shape, polishing & the insertion technique has led to the term as a 'painless insertion' being applied, although not strictly pain free, the sensation is usually a small local scratch on the skin surface followed by a diffuse of a dull ache.

Dry needling is fantastic to use during treatment as the targeted tissues can be stimulated with the needle. These tissues are not manually palpable as the needle will be able to penetrate through the tissues. Combine dry needling with sports massage to get the full benefits of both treatments to make you feel amazing.

Myofascial Dry Cupping

Cupping is an ancient form of alternative therapy which dates back to Ancient Egyptian, Chinese & Middle Eastern cultures. During cupping therapy, therapists apply glass, bamboo or silicone cups to the skin for a few minutes to create suction.

The application of cups can be used to treat a variety of conditions such as:-

  • Muscle Pain & Tension

  • Reduced Joint Movement

  • Headaches

  • Back Pain & Sciatica

  • Stress & Anxiety

There are 2 types of cupping therapy and that is Wet Cupping & Dry Cupping. During Wet Cupping, the skin is slit slightly and the cup is placed over the area in order to bleed the area. During Dry Cupping, the cups are placed over several areas to create a vacuum which lifts the soft tissue & creates an upward stretch within the muscle & associated fascia. This vacuum lift helps to increase in blood flow & induce a stretch effect, which results in a reduction in muscle tension & associated pain.

Dry Cupping is used here at Cotswold Sports & Beauty Therapy using the suction cup procedure. This is where the oxygen is sucked out of the cup with a pump which eliminating any burn risk to you. Cupping is a technique which is used in conjunction with massage therapy. My aim is to target the musculoskeletal system to reduce muscular tension & restore range of movement.

Cupping pulls blood to a region to stimulate healing. It is effective at stretching tight fascia & muscles. Cupping helps the tissue develop new blood flow & stimulates the healing process. Cupping is generally painless & many versions of Cupping can be found in different cultures such as Latin America, Europe, the Middle East & Asia. Dry Cupping helps aid soft tissue injuries, reduce pain or discomfort by:-

  • Increasing localised circulation

  • Increasing oxygenation & nutrient content within the tissue

  • Removing stagnant blood & waste products

  • Re-initiating the healing process

  • Stretches fascia & connective tissue, which leads to a relaxation response.

During Dry Cupping, the cups can either be left in a static position (this is where the cup is left stationary); movement to provide a deep tissue massage effect; and flash/walking (this is where multiple cups are placed along the muscle. Then the first cup is removed and reapplied in front of the last cup providing continuous movement of cups). Both the static & movement applications of cupping therapy complement other therapy techniques such as Sports Massage, Deep Tissue Massage & Dry Needling.

Myofascial Dry Cupping here at Cotswold Sports & Beauty Therapy has additional techniques involved within Dry Cupping Therapy. Active movement which is a sliding technique is used whilst the client actively moves the associated joint. Soft Tissue Release which is where the muscle is put into a shortened & relaxed position, whilst multiple cups are applied, then the joint is moved actively or passively. This is great at producing a quicker stretch response & restoring range of movement. Then there is movement which is where static dry cupping is combined with stretching modalities. Using these techniques, the stretch that is produced in the soft tissue & the fascia leads to a relaxation effect within the muscle, which results improved range of motion & performance.

Initially the vacuum application of the cup pulls blood into an area. This leads to the effected tissue becoming saturated with fresh blood. This saturation can often leave a circular mark, which is consistent with a hicky or a love bite mark. However, this usually disappears after a day or so, & happens to a lesser extent on subsequent treatments. These marks can take up to 21 days for them to disappear. In many cases, within about a week.

This treatment is carried out with Sports Massage Therapy combined with Myofascial Dry Cupping.

Ultrasound Therapy

Ultrasound Therapy is a non-invasive, pain-free modality with little or no sensation felt while receiving treatment. Ultrasound is commonly used to treat injuries of the tendons, ligaments & muscles. Ultrasound equipment generates high-frequency sound waves that are transferred to a specific body area via the transducer head (round-headed probe). A hypoallergenic gel is applied to the skin which creates a friction-free surface. The sound waves travel deep into the tissues which creates a gentle heat. Using gentle, circular motions with the transducer head & the treatment can last several minutes. The benefits of ultrasound for injury treatment are a deep heating effect, increased rate of tissue repair & reduced pain & muscle tightness.

If you require ultrasound for your injury, I will include it within your treatment. If it is just ultrasound you require, you will be assessed. The cost of this service is £20 for a session.

Kinesiology & Athletic Taping

Kinesiology tape is a thin, stretchy, elastic cotton strip with an acrylic adhesive. It is identical to human skin in both thickness & elasticity. This allows the tape to be worn without binding, constricting or restricting movement. It has many benefits for a wide variety of musculoskeletal & sports injuries, plus inflammatory conditions to support musculoskeletal movement on a daily basis 24 hours a day. Kinesiology taping is not a restrictive tape, it allows full range of motion, provides to improve kinesthetic awareness of posture & alignment.

Kinesiology tape is designed to support muscles & joints, as well as circulation & lymph flow. It is used for a wide range of problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, lower back strain/pain or overuse, subluxations, herniated disc, knee problems, haematoma, sports injuries, shoulder conditions etc. Kinesiology taping is water resistant & this can be worn during heavy workouts & can be left in place during functional treatments.

Athletic Taping is a more traditional sports tape which is wrapped around a joint. It is used for joint stabilisation, support during a sporting event, restrict movement. Taping is used to alleviate pain, enhance performance & facilitate rehabilitation.

Taping may be used during your treatment. If it is just taping you require, an assessment will also be included. The cost of this service is £20 for a session.

Tuina Massage (Chinese Massage)

Tuina Massage (pronounced twee-nah) is one of the Chinese healing arts of deep massage & manipulation. This is a fundamental part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Tuina is a very effective therapy for a wide array of ailments & is performed on the massage couch or on a chair. Tuina massage is performed over clothing through a series of techniques involving kneading, grasping, tapping, pressing, rotating, rolling, rocking & many more to remove tension in the muscles & blockages of Chi in the meridians. Tuina means to 'push & grasp' & this reflects this massage is intense & vigorous combined with stimulation on acupressure points.

This is used to treat muscle spasms & cramps, sports injuries, sciatica, arthritis, shoulder impingement, frozen shoulder, muscular pain, joint stiffness, reduce scar tissue, to name a few ailments of musculoskeletal system. Other benefits of this massage therapy include alleviation of stress related disorders like insomnia, constipation, headaches. Other disorders relating to digestion, respiratory, lymphatic, circulatory systems. Balancing Chi energy restores balance in the body's energies, manipulation of energy through the meridians & acupressure points.

This makes Tuina a complete massage due to the 2 aspects where East meets West. Firstly, the Western origins of massages works the muscles to help relax them, removing stagnation & allowing blood to flow more freely throughout the area, giving the muscle the optimum chance of repairing itself.
